United Nations Security Council

Topic: Using Artificial Intelligence to Aid the Environment

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) was established in 1946 and is primarily responsible for addressing international peace and security issues. Its purposes include maintaining international peace and security, fostering friendly relations among nations, cooperating to address global challenges, and promoting respect for human rights. The UNSC has ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms, while the "P5," which consists of China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, hold special veto power. This privilege allows them to block any substantive resolution, even if it enjoys widespread support from other members. Under the UN Charter, decisions made by the Council must be adhered to by all member states, making this a distinctive feature of the UNSC.

  • Vanshika Sindhu

    DIRECTOR

Vanshika Sindhu is a current senior at Liberty High School, and is thrilled to serve as the Director of the UNSC at WAIMUN 2023! This is her fourth year doing MUN, and after being forced to join by her friend in her freshman year of high school, she has grown to love it more and more every year. Through MUN, she was encouraged to break out of her shell and acquired a newfound passion for public speaking – something she hated when she was younger. Now, she proudly serves as her school’s MUN club President and loves immersing herself in the MUN community. When she’s not avidly debating geopolitical issues, Vanshika can be found watching true-crime shows on Netflix, listening to music, or listening to the newest album drops. Vanshika is looking forward to meeting the UNSC delegates and watching them have an enjoyable and fun-filled debate!

  • Yihang Li

    CHAIR

Currently a sophomore at Dover Bay Secondary School, Yihang Li is thrilled to be serving as the Chair of UNSC at WAIMUN 2023. Ever since stumbling upon her first conference in grade 7, where she delivered a few rushed and barely audible sentences over Zoom, Yihang has developed a profound passion for the world of debate and diplomacy. MUN has left her with countless unparalleled experiences - from fervent table knocking to late-night resolution writing to lasting friendship building. Beyond MUN, Yihang can be found enjoying long strolls at the beach, exploring the latest scientific breakthroughs, and losing her voice while singing along to her Spotify playlist. She cannot wait to meet all delegates and forge some unforgettable memories together at this year’s iteration of WAIMUN!
